When you think of Seafood, it’s unlikely that NYC is the first place that comes to mind. But this city we call home was once home to oyster beds that were believed to contain half of the worlds oysters.
Today, those supplies have vastly diminished and in some locales the price to consume the half shell treasures leave much to be desired. But as a city that celebrates the notion of social life there are many locales where you can grab oysters for as little as a buck with a discounted bevvie.
Here is our roundup:
Brooklyn
Mon – Fri 4pm-7pm
$1.25
Probably one of the best locations for a variety of oysters. Maison has an old world vibe and a people watching worthy crowd. Oh and yeah, oysters.
Mon – Fri 5pm – 7pm
$1
Boerum Hill is one of our favourite locales and grossly overlooked by visitors. Catch some buck oysters at Grand Army before wandering over to Prospect Park for an outdoor concert.
Mon – Fri 4:30pm – 7:30pm
$1
Crown Heights is home to some of Brooklyn’s signature brownstones and the route of the annual west Indian day parade. It is also home to Catfish, a Cajun restaurant/bar that serves dollar oysters on the daily.
Manhattan
Mon-Fri 4pm-7pm
$1
A ride over the Manhattan bridge will give you great views, but if you are feeling peckish quick stop to nearby Belle Reve will satisfy your oyster craving and they serve a very North East treat of a Narraganset beer too.
Mon – Fri 5pm – 7pm
We are not always fans of midtown haunts but Crave Fishbar is the exception. Conveniently located off the hustle and bustle of the area Crave offers a very New York interior (brick walls anyone??) and a variety of oysters that will keep you more than satisfied.
Mon–Fri 5pm-7pm
$1
Bar Belly is the kind of place that reminds us of a New York of long ago. Raw, edgy and yet intimate and local. Their cocktail selection is on point and rivaled only slightly by the live music and buck oysters.
